This route links Fes and Marrakech by way of the Sahara. It also follows the Ziz Valley, the Todra Gorges and the road of a thousand kasbahs. So it is one of the most complete tours of southern Morocco.
Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga
We head south across the Middle Atlas. Along the way you breathe the fresh air of the cedar forests. There we stop to see the monkeys. Then we cross the Ziz Valley and the Tafilalt palm grove. In the afternoon we reach the great dunes of Merzouga. Night in a hotel by Erg Chebbi.
Day 2: Merzouga – Erg Chebbi loop – night in the desert
In the morning we tour Erg Chebbi by 4×4. First, we see the Merzouga oasis and the nomad lands. Then we visit Khamlia, the Gnawa village, and the old Mifiss mines. We return to the hotel at midday to rest.
In the afternoon the dromedaries are waiting. With them we ride into the dunes to the camp. Tonight is special: a Berber dinner, music and a sky full of stars. We sleep in tents among the dunes.
Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley
We get up early to watch the sunrise. Then we ride back to the hotel for a shower and breakfast. Next, we pass through ancient Rissani. After that, we reach the Todra Gorges, where you can walk along the river. Many climbers come here. In the afternoon we arrive in the Dades Valley. Night in the valley.
Day 4: Dades – Kelaa M’Gouna – Skoura – Ouarzazate
After breakfast we follow the road of a thousand kasbahs. First, we reach Kelaa M’Gouna, in the Valley of Roses. The rose festival is held here in May. Then we pass the Skoura palm grove and visit the Amridil kasbah. In the afternoon we tour the Taourirt kasbah in Ouarzazate. Night in Ouarzazate.
Day 5: Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Tizi n’Tichka – Marrakech
After breakfast we visit the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1987 and is one of the best-preserved ksour. Then we cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka, at 2,260 metres. We reach Marrakech in the late afternoon.
