15-day Morocco tour from Tangier: imperial cities, coast and Merzouga desert

15-day Morocco tour from Tangier: a private, tailor-made trip with your own driver and a flexible itinerary.

This is our most complete tour. It starts in Tangier and follows the Atlantic coast down to Essaouira. Then it goes through Marrakech, the Atlas and the Merzouga desert. Finally, it heads back north via Fes and Chefchaouen.

Day 1: Tangier – Caves of Hercules – Asilah

We pick you up at Tangier airport or port. If there is time, we explore the “gateway to Africa”. Then we visit the Caves of Hercules, which face the Atlantic. Legend says Hercules rested here after his twelve labours. In the afternoon we reach Asilah, a seaside town of white and blue houses.

Day 2: Asilah – Rabat

After breakfast we leave for Rabat, the administrative capital. It is an elegant city, with gardens and a mix of tradition and modern life. You have free time to explore it.

Day 3: Rabat – Casablanca

We follow the coast to Casablanca, the country’s economic capital. You have the day to explore it. We also visit the Hassan II Mosque, one of the few open to non-Muslims.

Day 4: Casablanca – Essaouira

We drive along the Atlantic to Essaouira, a World Heritage Site. Its walled medina faces the sea and keeps all its charm. Its bay is also a haven for wind sports. Free time and night at the hotel.

Day 5: Essaouira – Marrakech

In the morning you stroll through the Essaouira medina. Then we drive to Marrakech and take you to your riad. Free afternoon.

Day 6: Guided tour of Marrakech

Today you visit Marrakech with a guide who knows its history well. It is one of the four imperial cities, at the foot of the Atlas. It also has many World Heritage monuments.

Day 7: Free day in Marrakech

A free day to rest, go shopping or try an optional activity.

Day 8: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura – Dades

We leave at 8 am over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Along the way we stop to enjoy the Atlas views. Then we visit the Ait Ben Haddou kasbah and have lunch at a traditional restaurant. Next, we pass Ouarzazate, its kasbah and its film studios. After that, we cross the Skoura palm grove and the Valley of Roses. Dinner and night by the Dades river.

Day 9: Dades – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Rissani – Merzouga

We follow the road of the kasbahs from Boumalne. The landscape is ochre, red and mauve. Then we reach Tinghir and walk through the Todra Gorges. Next, we pass Erfoud, the fossil town. We also visit the Rissani market. In the afternoon we reach Merzouga, where you are welcomed with tea.

Day 10: Merzouga – Khamlia – nomads – night in the desert

After breakfast we tour the Erg Chebbi dunes by 4×4. First, we see how the nomad families live. Then we visit oases and small desert communities. We also stop in Khamlia to hear Gnawa music over tea. In the afternoon we take a 90-minute camel ride for sunset. Dinner with drums and a night in a tent.

Day 11: Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Ziz Valley – Midelt

We get up early for sunrise over the dunes. Then we ride back for a shower and breakfast. Next, we visit the Rissani souk, the most authentic in the south. After that, we cross the Ziz Valley, with more than 18,000 palm trees. Dinner and night in Midelt.

Day 12: Midelt – Meknes – Volubilis – Fes

We drive to Meknes and visit the Roman ruins of Volubilis. Then we continue to Fes. You have the rest of the day to explore the city.

Day 13: A day in Fes

A free day to discover Fes, the religious and cultural heart of the country. The city has three parts: Fes el Bali, Fes Jdid with the Mellah, and the new town. Its medina is a World Heritage Site and has barely changed since the Middle Ages. Don’t miss the Moulay Idriss zawiya or the Andalusian quarter.

Day 14: Fes – Chefchaouen

We leave early for Chefchaouen, in the Rif mountains. It is a blue town with little traffic and fresh air. So it invites you to stay and wander at your own pace.

Day 15: Chefchaouen – Tangier

We drive to Tangier and take you to the port or the airport. End of the trip.
