A route off the beaten track: the oases of Tata, the great Erg Chegaga dunes, then Marrakech and the coast.

Day 1: Agadir – Tata

Departure for the Tata region, a base for the Akka oasis and some of Morocco’s finest rock engravings (Oum el-Alek, Tircht, Ait Herbil). A picnic on the way, then dinner and night in Tata, in a hotel or camp.

Day 2: Tata – Foum Zguid – Erg Chegaga

Lunch in Foum Zguid, then the track across the dry Lake Iriki to the high, silent dunes of Erg Chegaga. Sunset, dinner and a night in a nomad tent under thousands of stars.

Day 3: Erg Chegaga – M’Hamid – Tamegroute – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate

Sunrise and breakfast at the bivouac, then M’Hamid for a shower and lunch. The Koranic library and old kasbah of Tamegroute, Zagora and the Draa Valley to Ouarzazate. Dinner and night in a hotel.

Day 4: Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Atlas – Marrakech

The kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, one of the most spectacular in Morocco, and the High Atlas over the 2,260 m pass. Arrival in Marrakech around 5 pm.

Day 5: Marrakech – Essaouira – Marrakech

A day in Essaouira: the medina walls, the harbour, a walk on the beach and a seafood lunch. Back to Marrakech.

Day 6: guided Marrakech

A full day with a guide in the medina: the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Koutoubia, Jemaa el-Fna square, the Majorelle Garden and the craftsmen’s souks.
