What to see in Merzouga, the heart of the desert

Que ver en Merzouga corazón del desierto

Merzouga, on the edge of the Sahara, is the place to experience the beauty and silence of the Moroccan desert. This small village is famous for the Erg Chebbi dunes, the highest in the country, and is the perfect starting point for an authentic desert experience. Here is what not to miss.

what to see in Merzouga

1. The Erg Chebbi dunes

The main attraction of Merzouga: sand dunes up to 150 metres high, among the most famous in the Sahara. Here you can:

  • Ride a camel at sunset or sunrise, a desert classic, perhaps with a night in a camp among the dunes.
  • Try sandboarding, surfing on sand: fun and different.

2. A night in a desert camp

Sleeping in a camp among the Erg Chebbi dunes is one of the most authentic things you can do in Merzouga. The tents are comfortable and let you enjoy the silence, an extraordinary starry sky and Berber music around the fire.

3. Sunrise and sunset over the dunes

The colours of the sky and sand change constantly, creating unforgettable landscapes. It is worth getting up early for sunrise or waiting for sunset to take the best photos.

4. Khamlia, the Gnawa village

Khamlia is a small village near Merzouga, home to the Gnawa community, of sub-Saharan origin, who have kept their own music and traditions. A visit is a chance to hear their rhythmic, energetic music and learn about local life.

5. Dayet Srji lake

In the middle of the desert near Merzouga lies Dayet Srji, a small salt lake that attracts many migratory birds, including flamingos. It is a peaceful place, at its best after the rainy season when the lake fills with water.

6. The oases of Merzouga

Oases are islands of life in the middle of the dry land. There are several around Merzouga, with palm trees and crops: perfect for a break and a walk in the shade of the palm groves.

7. Trekking and 4×4 trips

For a more adventurous exploration, 4×4 trips take you to remote parts of the desert, past rock formations and small Berber villages.

8. Berber villages

The area around Merzouga is dotted with mud-brick Berber villages where people live mainly from farming and herding. They offer a unique insight into traditional desert life.

9. Small local museums

In and around Merzouga a few small museums display traditional objects, tools and clothing of the Berber tribes, along with information on the region’s flora, fauna and history.

Tips for your visit to Merzouga

  • Heat and cold: the desert climate is extreme. Days can be very hot, while nights are surprisingly cold, especially in winter. Bring light clothes for the day and something warm for the evening.
  • Sun protection: sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat or scarf for the sun and sand.
  • Water: dehydration is a real risk. Carry enough water and drink often.
  • Respect for local culture: Berbers are known for their hospitality; return it by respecting their customs.

In short

Merzouga is the gateway to the Sahara and one of Morocco’s most magical places. The Erg Chebbi dunes, starry nights, camel rides and Berber culture make it unforgettable. If you are looking for an authentic desert experience, this is the place.
