Asilah is a small town on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, south of Tangier, known for its relaxed pace, its art and its history. Here is what to see.

1. The medina
Surrounded by walls built by the Portuguese in the 15th century, it has clean white alleys decorated with murals by Moroccan and international artists. Look out for the Bab Homar and Bab Bhar gates.
2. Walls and bastions
Walk the ramparts with views of the Atlantic; the best-known spot is the Krikia, perfect at sunset, along with the El Kamra tower.
3. Beaches
The town beach is ideal for relaxing; to the south, Paradise Beach (Rmilat) is wilder and quieter.
4. The International Cultural Festival
In summer the town hosts a festival of exhibitions, workshops and performances: this is when many of the murals are painted.
5. Galleries and studios
Asilah is an artists’ town: many galleries and studios in the medina are open to the public.
6. The fishing port
Watch everyday life and eat the freshest fish in the nearby restaurants.
7. Food
Fish tagine, seafood pastilla and traditional pastries; the markets are great for fresh produce and spices.
8. San Bartolomé church
A Catholic church from the Spanish protectorate era, a reminder of the town’s multicultural history.
