A guided tour of Fes is one of the richest experiences you can have in Morocco. Here is an itinerary with the main sights.

1. The medina (Fes el-Bali)
One of the largest medieval city centres in the world, a UNESCO site, with narrow alleys, souks, mosques and madrasas. A local guide is almost essential so you don’t get lost.
2. Bou Inania madrasa
A 14th-century Koranic school famous for its carved wood, zellige tiles and courtyard fountain.
3. Al Qaraouiyine University
Founded in 859, it is considered the oldest university in the world still in operation. The complex includes a mosque and library: you cannot go in, but you can admire its beauty from the doors.
4. Chouara tanneries
From the surrounding terraces you see the large vats of dye where leather is still worked by hand. The smell is strong, but the sight is unique.
5. Nejjarine square
Known for its decorated fountain. Next door, the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts occupies an old caravanserai.
6. The Royal Palace (Dar el-Makhzen)
It is not open to visitors, but its huge golden gates are among the most photographed sights in the city.
7. The Mellah
The old Jewish quarter, founded in the 15th century, with the Aben Danan synagogue (17th century) and the large Jewish cemetery.
8. Dar Batha Museum
In a 19th-century palace, it displays Moroccan art and crafts, including Fes’s famous blue pottery.
9. Jnan Sbil Gardens
Fountains, paths and plants: the perfect break after the bustle of the medina.
10. Seffarine square
The coppersmiths’ square: to the sound of hammers you can watch craftsmen working copper and brass and buy handmade pieces.
