Tetouan, in the Rif region of northern Morocco, is one of the country’s most charming cities, with a UNESCO-listed medina and an authentic atmosphere. Here is what not to miss.

1. The medina
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, it is one of Morocco’s best-preserved medinas, with alleys full of shops, craft workshops and traditional houses, organised by quarter and trade.
2. Hassan II square
The heart of the city, between the medina and the modern town, overlooked by the Royal Palace (visible from outside only).
3. The Archaeological Museum
Finds from the region’s ancient civilisations, including Roman ones, with mosaics and sculptures in the garden.
4. The School of Arts and Crafts (Dar Sanaa)
Young people learn traditional crafts here: you can watch artisans working with wood, ceramics, zellige and embroidery.
5. The Ethnographic Museum
Clothing, jewellery and objects that tell the story of the city’s traditions, with strong Andalusian influences.
6. The Great Mosque
One of the oldest in the medina. It is not open to non-Muslims, but the exterior is worth a look.
7. The Mellah
The old Jewish quarter reflects the long coexistence of cultures in Tetouan.
8. Mount Dersa
Above the city, it offers spectacular views over Tetouan and, on clear days, as far as the Strait of Gibraltar. Ideal for a walk.
9. Nearby beaches
A few kilometres away on the Mediterranean: Martil, Cabo Negro and M’diq.
10. Markets and food
The traditional markets show everyday life. Try couscous, harira, tagine and local pastries.
Less famous than Fes or Marrakech, Tetouan surprises with its authenticity and charm.
