Tangier is a lively, cosmopolitan city in northern Morocco on the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. Its African, Arab, European and Jewish influences make it a unique stop. Here is what to see, what to do and a few tips.

What to see in Tangier
- The medina: the historic heart, a maze of alleys with markets, shops, cafés and Moorish-style buildings.
- The kasbah: the fortress at the top of the medina, with spectacular views over the city and the sea. Inside, the Kasbah Museum tells the story of Tangier.
- The port: one of Morocco’s most important, with sea-view restaurants and cafés and ferries to Spain.
- Place du 9 Avril (Grand Socco): one of the busiest spots and the gateway to the medina.
- Café Hafa: a historic terraced café above the sea, frequented by writers and musicians such as Paul Bowles and the Rolling Stones.
- Contemporary art: the city has galleries and a contemporary art museum with Moroccan and international works.
- The city beach: close to the centre, ideal for a stroll along the seafront.
- The Caves of Hercules: on the Atlantic coast at Cap Spartel. Legend says Hercules rested here; the opening to the sea resembles the shape of Africa.
- The new town: boulevards, European-era buildings and cafés that recall Tangier’s international past.
What to do in Tangier
- Explore the souk, with spices, rugs and crafts: bargaining is part of the experience.
- Walk the seafront (Avenue Mohammed VI), lined with shops, cafés and restaurants.
- Cross the Strait: Tarifa, in Spain, is about an hour away by ferry.
- Hike in Perdicaris Park, in the hills above the city, with sea views.
- Try the local food: tagine, couscous, briouats, pastries and mint tea in the historic cafés.
Tips for your visit
- Dress: modestly, especially in the medina and near religious sites.
- Cash: there are ATMs, but you will need cash in markets and small shops.
- Safety: Tangier is fairly safe; as anywhere, keep an eye on your belongings.
- Language: Arabic and Berber are official, French is widely spoken, and Spanish and English are understood in tourist areas.
- Taxis: agree the fare before getting in or ask for the meter. Many sights in the centre are within walking distance.
In short
From the medina to its modern boulevards and coastline, Tangier blends old and new and is a great starting point for exploring Morocco.
